Adjoa Kpeto is a self-taught visual artist based in Rotterdam. Kpeto’s signature style involves bold colour palettes, dense compositions and a dance between depth and flatness.

In their work, X explores the tensions between the two cultures they grew up with. On the one hand, western thinking, which emphasises constructed order, binary oppositions and linearity; and on the other hand, the spiritual, organic, and intangible, which carries more weight in Ewe culture.

For Kpeto, making art is a way to make sense of an accelerating world full of stimuli. Inspired by both African and modernist European art, their work balances between order & chaos, online & offline, past & future, meaning & emptiness. Their paintings can be read as a negotiation between seemingly oppositional concepts. In doing so, Kpeto aims to inspire others to envision a universe in which things could be different.
